About
On Sunday morning, October 14, 1951, a group of people met in the rented store building at 1103 South Pulaski Road, for the purpose of organizing themselves into a Baptist church after the true New Testament pattern and order.
The church started as a mission endeavor of the Cleaton Baptist Church in Cleaton, Kentucky, and was led by Pastor F.R. Bingham. The church officially began with thirteen charter members. Almost immediately after the inception of Jordan Baptist Church the church began a building program.
On Sunday, August 24, 1952, the church voted to buy a building at 6601 South Honore Street in Chicago. The services started in the new building in September of 1952. In the early years of Jordan Baptist Church, many new churches were started as mission churches of Jordan Baptist Church throughout the Chicagoland area.
In January, 1957, Jordan Baptist Church purchased the vacant lot at 87th St. and Lawler, our present location. The new building immediately began to be built and work was finally completed in December of 1958. The first service at our new building was held on the first Sunday in January, 1959. An adjoining parking lot was purchased in June, 1960. Soon thereafter an addition was built on the present building.
Pastor Bingham would lead the church until April of 1974. William Johnson was chosen as succeeding pastor and would remain in that position until 1976. In 1976, John Dale was chosen as Pastor. It was under his ministry, in 1977, that our Junior Church was started. Pastor Dale remained Pastor until 1979.
In August, 1979, Jordan Baptist Church called Don White to be the fourth Pastor. He was, at that time, a pastor in Columbia, Tennessee. Under Pastor White’s leadership the church continued to grow both numerically and financially. In 1989, Pastor White was called away to a church in Tennessee.
Jim Wing became the fifth Pastor of Jordan Baptist Church in 1989. Pastor Wing added many additional ministries including the Jordan Baptist School in 1992.
In 1997, Assistant Pastor Thomas Griffin became the present Pastor. Since that time, many new ministries have been added and veteran ministries have seen phenomenal growth. Jordan Baptist School also opened its doors to surrounding local churches and now enjoys some of its greatest enrollments. The church has also grown numerically under his leadership. It is exciting to see how God will work in Jordan Baptist Church in the years to come.
